A battling performance worthy of the Spartans themselves saw Abbeymead end up glorious in defeat. In what turned out to be a bruising and physical game Abbeymead battled to the end in a fascinating cup tie.
It all began with a blaze of glory when Sam Collins smashed in a sweet volley after good work by Matt Ball and Gareth Davies on the right. Mitcheldean drew level before an excellent goal direct from a free kick by Gareth Davies put Abbeymead back in front.
Mitcheldean against the run of play managed to level the scores. With Jacob Ellmore in goal behind a solid back four of Adam Thrall, Nate Crosby, Barnaby George, and Brian Goodman, Abbeymead were able to dominate the rest of the first half. Within the space of a few minutes Mitcheldean were lucky to still be in the game. Abbeymead were denied three goals as they hit the bar twice and saw the Mitcheldean goalkeeper pull off an excellent save. The midfield dynamic duo of Tom Rich and Dom Tye refused to be dominated by an aggressive Mitcheldean midfield and have the bruises as trophies. The first half ended with scores level at 2-2
The second half started with the same level of commitment as seen in the first half. Adam Crabbe and Chris Evans were introduced to add some fresh legs in midfield and defence respectively. The game ebbed and flowed as both teams pushed for the next goal. Corners at both ends led to chances but no goals, until Dom Tye picked up a loose ball in the box and calmly slotted home to put Abbeymead back in front. Just when Abbeymead thought they were gaining control, Mitcheldean hit back again to equalize for the third time.
Disaster then struck the proud Abbeymead Rovers. Two goals in quick succession saw Abbeymead fall behind. However Abbeymead never gave up and in true style forced the game into an exiting climax when Sam Collins rounded the Mitcheldean goalkeeper to put Abbeymead right back in the game. With only a few minutes left the game was finally settled when Mitcheldean scored to put the game beyond the reach of a valiant Rovers side.
