Abbeymead Rovers 'A' 5 F.C. Highnam 0
Gloucester Youth League
Sunday 3rd September 2007
Abbeymead started their first 11-a-side match with a solid win over a good Highnam team. The game was played in an excellent spirit on and off the pitch and was well refereed. The first fifthteen minutes were tight with few chances at either end. The Abbeaymead midfield of Jack Ashmead, Joe Wilton and Ben Langworthy won their battle and started to push Highnam backwards - Dan Lutman on the right wing won the ball and put over a delightful cross for Wilton to head home. The Highnam keeper kept them in the game with two excellent saves from Max Harper-Emerson. Clayton Dee then had a magical five minutes - his determination to win the ball was rewarded with a goal, then Jack Ashmead set him up for another and then good work from Langworthy and Sam Benzie set him up for the fourth and his hat-trick.
Highnam started the second half well - Elliot Basford had to marshal his defence well - Sam Ashmead was awesome and Jack Boyce and Sam Benzie were very solid. They prevented Highnam from troubling goalkeeper Matt Sutton all game. Abbeymead made several changes and it took a while for them to settle - Josh Cannon's pace up front and Adam Reade's width continued to cause Highnam problems. Boyce and Reade combined well to set up Elliot Obee whose curling shot made the score 5-0.
