Eagles Have Finally Landed!

Having formed only two years ago, and what is effectively the Abbeymead Rovers under-10 fifth team, being run by fourteen year old Ross Langworthy and fifthteen year old Danny Gittings, with support from Dave Pritchett, Abbeymead Rovers Eagles have now won two league matches.

Last season, they picked only one point from one draw all season, although they did win the Fair Play Award. This season they have so far won two and drawn three matches.

Abbeymead Rovers 'Eagles' 2 Leckhampton Rovers 'B' 1
Cheltenham Youth League
16th December 2006

It took the Eagles a while to wake up though, with early chances falling to Leckhampton. From a few successive corners, Leckhampton hit the post twice and Eagles defender Sam Kent cleared off the line twice. Some strong tackles by fellow defender Dan Witcombe helped to keep Leckhampton at bay. The Eagles started to put some passes together towards the end of the first half, and with slick movement from Olly Pritchet and Sam Benzie in the Abbeymead midfield, and Matt Kent up front, forced a number of attacks and corners. The Leckhampton keeper made some good saves from Pritchett, with Ryan Barret pouncing on a rebound before the keeper jumped on the ball to keep it out. With a few minutes to go until the half time break, a Pritchett free-kick skimmed the wall and narrowly missed the post.

At the start off the second half, a Sam Benzie long ball lead to Ryan Barret and Joe Taylor playing a one-two, which lead to Taylor?s shot being blocked by the hand of a Leckhampton defender. Benzie stepped up to the spot and fired Eagles into the lead. Leckhampton kept out relentless Abbeymead attacks, not being able to get out of their own half. Captain Pritchett, leading by example, took the ball round three defenders, cutting in from the right wing to smash home from a tight angle, and give Abbeymead a well deserved two-nil lead. The next five minutes were entertaining end to end football, with Kent and Jay Singhera keeping the Leckhampton attack out, aided by some splendid saves from keeper Cobie Ho. Leckhampton made it a nail biting finish, with a goal five minutes from time following good pressure, but Abbeymead held out to give them a heroic win.

Abbeymead Rovers 'Eagles' 4 St.Marks Juniors 1
Cheltenham Youth League
20th January 2007

Abbeymead Rovers Eagles secured their second win of the season with their best team performance of the season so far. Goals came from Sam Benzie, Chloe Barton, Joe Taylor and a St.Marks own goal. The pick of the goals was Abbeymead's fourth. Good work by Sam Kent left Joe Taylor one on one with the St.Marks keeper and he finished calmly, slotting the ball under the on rushing keeper. Cobi Ho was outstanding in goal for Abbeymead, pulling off several fine saves to deny St.Marks as they tried to salvage the game late in the second half. Abbeymead held on to secure their best win in two seasons of league football.

Hardwicke Rangers 0 Abbeymead Rovers 'A' 1

Gloucester Youth League
Saturday 27th January 2007

An excellent game of football between two teams who like to play football. Neither goalkeeper was challenged too much in the first half but there was some excellent passing from both teams. Brodie Goddard-Jones put over some excellent crosses but just out of the reach of Ben Langworthy and Joe Wilton. Elliot Basford defended superbly and started many good moves. A Dan Lutman cross went just wide and at the other end a lovely cross was met by the centre forward who fired just wide giving Hall a scare.

Within a minute of the re-start Josh Cannon intercepted a pass and put in Jamal Lawrence who finished superbly. Minutes later the same pair combined and Lawrence this time hit the bar. Elliot Obee collected the ball, went on a run and fired just wide. The Abbeymead defence went to sleep just once but fortunately the Hardwicke striker fired wide. Clayton Dee went up front and caused the Hardwicke defence many problems, but Abbeymead could not get the second. Hardwicke defender Jerome Vidgen was excellent in containing the dangerous Dee and earnt himself man of the match for Rangers. George Hall had to come off his line quickly on two occasions but managed to keep a clean sheet.

Abbeymead Rovers 'A 0 Tredworth Tigers 1

Gloucester Youth League - League Cup Q/F
Saturday 20th January 2007

Abbeymead were depleted by illness and came into this match with a bare seven players against the league leaders who had brought in re-enforcements. After just five minutes Abbeymead lost Brodie Goddard-Jones through injury and as a result they spent the remainder of the match defending. George Hall in goal was superb keeping out the Tigers again and again. Elliot Basford was a rock in defence and Clayton Dee caused some concerns for the Tigers at the other end. Just before half time a shot went through the defence leaving Hall unsighted and the Tigers took the lead.

In the second half Hall saved a penalty and Rovers were hanging on. However, the longer the game stayed at just one-nil Abbeymead were always in with a chance. In the last ten minutes the tables turned. Dee went forward and it was the Tigers who were hanging on. Dee, Joe Wilton and Ben Langworthy all went close but Abbeymead could not get the equaliser. A proud team performance against all the odds. This result now clears the way for the Tigers to probably win a league and cup double.

In the first half Lydney defended really well putting all seven players behind the ball. Abbeymead only managed two goals from Jamal Lawrence and Joe Wilton.

In the second half the flood gates opened - man of the match, Clayton Dee got four, Brodie Goddard-Jones got three, Lawrence and Wilton got another one each and Elliot Obee scored his first for some time with an own goal rounding off the scoring. Elliot Basford, Ben Langworthy, Josh Cannon and Dan Lutman were all involved in setting up goals whilst not getting on the score sheet.
