Lydney 'B' 1 Abbeymead Rovers 'A' 18

Gloucester Youth League
Saturday 28th October 2006

Within the first five seconds Abbeymead had taken the lead when top scorer Clayton Dee burst through to score. By half time the score was eleven - nil and Abbeymead had played some superb football against a plucky Lydney team that never gave up. Elliot Basford and Sam Benzie - playing only his second game for this team, were very comfortable at the back and started many fine passing moves. George Hall was a virtual spectator as it was very much one way traffic. In the second half Abbeymead increased there goals tally to eighteen. Abbeymead's goal scorers were: Clayton Dee (9), debutants Dan Lutman (2) and Dale Rawlings (2), Joe Wilton (2), Jamal Lawrence (2) and Ben Langworthy (1).

Lydney never gave up and made the most of some poor defending to snatch a goal near the end. If it were not for their keeper Ellis Boughton the score would have been well into the twentys.

Abbeymead Rovers 'A' 1 Hucclecote 0

Gloucester Youth League - League Cup
Saturday 14th October 2006

Two of the favourites for the cup were drawn together in a preliminary round which produced football of the highest standard. Abbeymead should have taken the lead from the penalty spot but the keeper made a fine save from Brodie Goddard-Jones. Elliot Basford and Clayton Dee were superb in defence in keeping Shane Burford and Daniel Webb quiet. It was Dee who gave Abbeymead the lead when his free kick from distance went straight in - Josh Cannon claiming an assist with a clever dummy. George Hall had to make some smart saves but Hucclecote were restricted to shooting from distance because of excellent defence from Dee, Goddard-Jones and in particular Basford. Jamal Lawrence was a constant threat at the other end and Joe Wilton and Ben Langworthy both had chances to extend the lead but Abbeymead held on to claim a deserved win.

Abbeymead Thunder - 23rd September 2006

Match Week 2

Game 1 - Abbeymead Thunder 0 v Churchdown Panther Colts 6
The game started really well with the team adjusting extremely well to a new playing system. The defence was really tight and both the midfield and the defence were working together as a tight unit marshalled expertly by Harry.
Thunder conceded a goal midway through the first half despite some great battling defensive work by Shane. By half time Churchdown had scored 3, but Abbeymead's heads did not drop, and they kept creating chances.
The second half took much the same shape as the first with the team playing really well and creating some good goal scoring opportunities but without the finishing touches. Churchdown deservedly scored 3 more goals but the result did not reflect the good performance put in.

Man of the Match : Harry Edwards

Game 2 - Abbeymead Thunder 1 v Southside 3
The second game was a much tighter affair with the team gaining more confidence with the new "system" to which they were playing. Harry, Shane and Ieuan were providing the defensive platform on which the rest of the team were able to build. Unfortunately, half way through the first half Southside undid the Thunder defence and scored a well taken goal. Abbeymead continued to play well and kept Southside out.
Southside were quicker off the mark in the second half and scored a couple of early goals, one of which took a wicked deflection giving Dale no chance to make the save. However, this spurred on the team and they created more chances in the second half with Ollie in particular creating chance after chance. That combined with Jordan's battling in midfield resulted in Thunder scoring through Ollie.
Thunder were far from and outplayed in this game and the effort put in by the whole team was top notch.
Man of the Match : Ollie Clegg
Coaches Comment : This was the best that we have seen this team perform, despite the scorelines. The boys gave their all and deserved more out of the games. However, as a team, they all said it was the best they had felt after any game!

Abbeymead Rovers 'A' 1 Tredworth Tigers 1

Gloucester Youth League
Saturday 30th September 2006

Last season these two teams dominated the Mid Glos Mini Soccer League - Abbeymead winning the Northern League with Tigers runners up. In the League Cup the roles were reversed with Tredworth beating Abbeymead in the final in extra time. So far this season both teams are unbeaten and it was easy to see why. This was an excellent game with many chances at both ends and a draw was probably a fair result.

Abbeymead dominated the first half - after just five minutes Ben Langworthy fed the ball down the line to Josh Cannon - he showed great persistence and put over a lovely cross for Jamal Lawrence to fire home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area. Alex Williams, in the Tredworth goal then made a string of superb saves - the first from another Lawrence pile-driver having been put through by an exellent diagonal ball from Joe Wilton - another from Brodie Goddard-Jones and then another from the lively Cannon. Tigers looked dangerous on the break but due to excellent defending from Elliot Basford and Clayton Dee, George Hall had only one save to make. Dee was a threat at the other end, meeting two Goddard-Jones corners but heading just over.

As in previous meetings, Tigers took the game to Abbeymead in the second half. A poor clearance was lumped into the area - Dee misjudged his clearance header and the ball fell kindly to Dominic Bernard who calmly finished. It was one way traffic for large parts of the second half and Basford, Dee, Goddard-Jones, Lawrence and Langworthy carried out their defensive duties superbly to protect Hall from having to make many saves. At the other end, in the final five minutes, Abbeymead could have snatched it when Goddard-Jones and Langworthy went close. Cannon was a constant threat but was left on his own against the Tigers defence. In the end a draw was a fair result.

Man of the Match: Clayton Dee
