History
Abbeymead Rovers Football Club was formed in 1997 by a group of local parents who had been coaching their children at Abbeymead School playing field and other local sites. The age groups at this time consisted of U7, U8 and U9 with about 80 members. To enable teams to participate in youth league football the club affiliated to the Gloucestershire Youth Football Association and was elected to the Gloucester Youth Association Football League at U10 level for the 1998/99 season. During its first year the club also entered two U9 teams and one U10 team into the Mid Gloucestershire Mini-Soccer League. Help was received from Gloucester City Council who provided an 11-a-side pitch and two mini soccer pitches at Abbeymead Park behind the school.
Since this time the club has grown significantly. From the 2003/2004 season the youth age groups ranges covered U6 to U16. From the 2004/2005 season, Abbeymead Rovers also added a girl's section and a men's senior side. The senior side was born from the Patriots Football Club who wanted to link up with another club. It was an ideal opportunity for both clubs and the result is that there is a route into men's football for any boys representing Abbeymead Rovers.
During 2004 Abbeymead Rovers achieved a significant milestone when it became a Football Association Charter Standard Club. As well as demonstrating it's commitment to grass roots football, it is an endorsement of the club's organisation and procedures.
For the 2006/2007 season Abbeymead Rovers will have youth team age groups from U6 to U16 (excl U15), girls team age groups at U13 and U13, and two senior men's teams. The teams will participate in Mid Gloucestershire Mini Soccer League, Cheltenham Youth League, Gloucester Youth Association Football League, Gloucester County Girls League, and the Stroud & District Football League.
